Mistress of Archives

Sister Bearie de Lishus of the Flaming Creme Brulee was born on August 7th, 1968, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.  When she was around 12, she realized she was different than the other boys by the fact that she liked other boys.  She hid that fact for time, but then at 15 began going out to the gay hot spots in Providence to see what was really out there for her (mainly a lot of generous older men who don't mind buying a boy a drink).  At 16, she took her first trip to Provincetown, MA, with a friend, the music of the day being the Pointer Sisters' "Jump" and Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me".  She fell in love with this small gay paradise on the cape and vowed to return one day.

Bearie went home and decided that modeling was her next step, so off to school she went. And even though the modeling career did not turn out as she had hoped, she did end up in front of the camera later in her adult life, and that training walking has never failed to help when wearing a pair of pumps.  At 18, she kept her promise to herself and followed her dream to move to P-town to bask in gay life!

In P-town, she made many friends, performed in her first shows wearing girl clothes and met the first man to play a significant romantic part of her life.  Her first real love was her partner Tim, who taught her the floral trade and how to arrange dried flowers and make money at it.  Together, they had a shop in P-town and even spent one winter in Florida along with the other P-town business gypsies who moved south in the winter when the gays quit coming for the season.  They ran their shop together for many years before the relationship ended, but she and Tim remained  very close friends until his passing a few years later.

Needing a change of pace, Bearie decided to move west to be with his closest sibling, his sister Margaret and her partner, Becky.  She rode into Arizona on a train to Flagstaff where they picked her up and drove her from the January snow of the high country into the warm Valley of the Sun and Phoenix.  She worked many jobs during that time from Taco Bell to Scottsdale Foundation for the Handicapped until eventually ending up at the Point Hilton at South Mountain.  It was around this time that Bearie met her current partner of 15 years, Doug.  Less than a year after meeting, they were living together and a year after that, had bought what would be the first home for both of them.  They and their two dogs, Bear and Rhoda, have been living happily there ever since.  It was also around this time that Bearie discovered a new group of friends and she and her best friend, Steve, decided to start a club for this new group of hairy men, The Bears of the West.

Bearie was very involved with the BOTW for over 8 years, made many great friends, got to know many in the gay community and spent most of that time as a club officer and president.  Finally deciding it was time for something new, she left the responsibilities of the club to the next generation of leaders, but not all the great friends she met there.  It was also about this time that Bearie became interested in another group of of intriguing friends, the Grand Canyon Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.  This group combined many of her passions into one:  heels, dresses, makeup, social involvement in the gay community and fundraising for worthy causes. And makeup...did I mention makeup?  Their motto of community outreach and guidance without guilt really rang true with her, as well as their saying about "joy, love, peace and happiness".  She was overjoyed to finally become a Black Veil on November 15th, 2008.  Bearie looks forward to a lifetime of camraderie, friendship and service with his Sisters not only here in Arizona, but with Sisters around the world!
